Could crowdsourced GPS navigation be the next big thing? Waze gives you voice-enabled GPS directions on your iOS, Android, BlackBerry (currently in beta), or Symbian-powered Nokia phone. Best of all, it's free. It's far from perfect, but if you're willing to trade some routing accuracy for features you can't find on other navigation apps, like real world travel times and up-to-the-minute, user-reported traffic jams, Waze is certainly worth checking out.

Crowdsourcing, Interface, and Routing
For this review, I tested Waze 3.1.1 on an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless. It's a 20.9MB download, and works on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 4.0 or later. Android owners already have free voice-enabled GPS navigation, and even the free Google Maps Navigation in Android lacks crowdsourced route data.

So here's how it works: Waze connects you to other drivers automatically (and anonymously) in the background. The app then pools data from everyone and channels it into more efficient, time-saving routing algorithms based on real world trip data from other users, not just what the map data infers. This is essentially what TomTom does with its long-standing IQ Routes feature, but we've never seen it on a free phone app before.

That said, crowdsourcing isn't a panacea, as the app's underlying routing algorithms need to be sound. It's here where Waze begins to fall flat. For example, I experienced some trouble with the start of a route on the east side in New York City. In order to go to central New Jersey, and unlike the Garmin n?vi 3590LMT ($399.99, 4 stars) I had on hand for comparison, Waze wanted to send me down the FDR, through Brooklyn, and through Staten Island, which, frankly, is completely insane. The ETA also jumped around numerous times, sometimes by as much as 30 or 40 minutes, until it finally settled in.

Once I got going and ignored the initial instructions, Waze figured out a better route by the time I had driven several avenues west across Manhattan. From there, it had no problem navigating me to my destination, although there were a few additional missteps. First, it stumbled on the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, and wanted me to drive around in what amounted to a near-circle instead of taking the immediately available entrance. And at the end of my trip, Waze claimed victory early and registered the route complete several blocks away from my actual destination address?even though it was part of a retirement community built in 2005.?

Navigation, ETA, and Audio
Waze isn't a particularly full featured as a navigation app, either. While en route, Waze doesn't display your current speed or the current road speed limit, and there's no 2D or 3D lane assistance. On the plus side, the colorful, animated traffic icons showing the current status and delay times looked sharp on the map on my iPhone 4.

Despite Waze's uncertainty in the beginning of trips with regard to ETA, it actually did a better job overall in testing than other navigation apps I've tested. You can tell it's crowdsourcing data, because it knows that even if a route is technically shorter, you could still end up taking just as long as the longer way on the highway, because of all the street lights. I watched several instances where Waze nailed the ETA in actuality, whereas the Garmin GPS guessed I'd arrive earlier, only to adjust itself as the trip went on to eventually match what Waze had said all along.?

There's also text-to-speech support, but it's not perfect. The voice prompt timing was a little less well tuned than the standalone Garmin n?vi 3590LMT, but I still had no problem following where Waze wanted me to go. While Waze read exit names correctly on the highway, it generally ommitted street names in favor of a basic "In 0.3 miles, take a right," followed by "take a right," which was disappointing. It doesn't tell you the name of the exit in advance, either. It will say, "In one mile, get ready to exit on the right," but won't say the actual exit name until when you're right on top of it, which is a little inconvenient.

On the plus side, voice prompts sounded full and warm, with just a touch of distortion (mainly from excessive limiting, in order to make the most of the iPhone 4's tiny speaker). I heard a few pronunciation gaffes, including "Geo Gia" for Georgia?although once I exited the highway, it got Georgia correct; apparently different modes use different pronunciation dictionaries.?

Incident Reporting, Lock Screen, and Conclusions
Tap the exclamation point on the bottom right, and it will pop up nine icons to report an accident, police activity, heavy traffic, and other road hazards. In landscape mode, it will only show six icons, though; you need to scroll to the right to see the other three. Still, this is where Waze really shines; the app popped up plenty of real-time traffic alerts during my various testing. And on one test route in particular, Waze popped up an alert that there was police activity coming up 400 feet ahead. And there was! There was a cop car at the side of the road with its lights on. Waze prompted me to either give it a thumbs up (meaning the report was correct), tell it that it was close but not exact, or tell it that there was in fact no cop present.

One other glitch: Waze didn't disable my iPhone's lock screen, the way TomTom, Magellan, and other navigation apps do. After a few minutes, the screen turned off while I was driving. When I pressed the power button to light up the screen again, it wanted me to enter my lock screen code. This is not good at 75 miles per hour. You can disable the iPhone's screen lock and re-enable it later, of course, but that's a clumsy thing to have to do each time you get in and out of the car.

Overall, Waze offers a fine, free GPS navigation solution, and with its heavy emphasis on crowdsourcing, it even offers some features that top brand names in navigation currently lack. On the other hand, its routing still needs plenty of work, and it could be more informative once on the road, both visually and audibly. The app has a bit of a revolutionary feel to it, thanks to its enthusiastic community of users, and thanks to the fact that it's free. Congratulations to late-night host turned fancy emcee Jimmy Kimmel, the recently announced host of the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Although the September 23 live broadcast will be his first time hosting the television-awards show, the gig seems a natural fit for Kimmel, given his prior hosting duties for the American Music Awards, ESPN's ESPYs and April's always-high-profile White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Kimmel has six months to prepare material for the broadcast, which will air live on ABC, and while we have no doubt he and his team are already hard at work devising a plan of attack, we've come up with a few ideas of our own that we hope he'll incorporate.

A Trailer for "TV Movie: The TV Movie" One of the things we enjoy most about Kimmel is his ability to cash in on his close relationships with celebrities and how many of them he manages to involve in his parody videos or sketches — all in the name of fun, of course. A Second 'Meeting' of the Handsome Men's Club Make no mistake, there were plenty of handsome men in Kimmel's first video, but it's been over two years since we've seen the meeting of the Handsome Men's Club, and surely they're due for another get-together. We'd like to know more about what being in that club actually means and what these handsome men do together. Also, we're guessing they've added a few new members to their ranks, some fresh meat from "True Blood" for example, like Ryan Kwanten, Alexander SkarsgÅrd or Joe Manganiello? We sat down with the English-born Collins recently in her adopted home of Los Angeles, where she talked about the movie, working with Tarsem and her thoughts on Kristen Stewart's not-really-a-rival take on Snow. First up, she talked us through her five favorite films.

These are so raw -- this is who I am, these movies. [Laughs] They're very girly. In no particular order... Love Actually. Most of these movies have British accents in them, because, being from England, there's something about films that I watch that have a British accent that I just feel so at home with. That film I can watch any day and it makes me smile; and I love Christmas, so it kind of matches perfectly.

Pride and Prejudice. I love sweeping British drama period pieces and I hope that one day I can do one just like that, because, to me, I love old English literature. And I'm a big Keira Knightley fan. It's just so beautiful aesthetically and in terms of story.

Harry Potter series

That's cheating. Do you have a particular favorite?

Is it cheating? [Laughs] It's hard to pick. I wouldn't necessarily know which. I mean, I love the Goblet of Fire. I don't know. Maybe the Goblet of Fire. I read those books so quickly when I was a kid, because that whole world was so, like... it took me out of my reality. And I just love magic and I loved that whole world, the creatures, and just how you felt so friendly with all the characters. The way they translated that into movies, I thought was genius. You know when they take a book, and they make it a movie, and you hope that it's gonna be everything that you hope for and more? To me they just succeeded. I don't know, I just love them so much. Every time I'm sick I'll watch a marathon of them and I can repeat all the words.

Hopefully you're sick for a while... I mean, so you can watch them all.

[Laughs] I know, they're so long. I just had laryngitis, so...

Breakfast Club. I was actually having trouble because I would say Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club, but that would be three. Of all three, Breakfast Club is my favorite. But those John Hughes films, with Molly Ringwald and the Brat Pack, those are my favorite grouped films. They're just so... they're timeless. I feel like, even when you're watching them now, they're so modern, and the characters are so real. They're just so appealing to me. I watched them with my mom when I was really young. I always would watch things with my mom that maybe other moms wouldn't allow their kids to watch. I associated with them right away. I just really, really love John Hughes.

Who's your favorite character in the movie?

I love Molly Ringwald. But I also love the basket case, Ally Sheedy -- you know, with the pixie sticks and the crunching of the sandwich. She's so fantastic.

Sabrina, with Audrey Hepburn. I actually spent my New Year's this year watching Sabrina, and as it turned midnight I paused it and it was just her face on screen, smiling. I was like, "What a cool way to start the New Year." She is just someone I've always admired. She says so much without saying anything at all. And back then they didn't do such fast cuts in films; they stayed on a character's face long enough for them to go from one emotion to another, and for the audience to really feel the emotion with each character -- and she in that movie just goes from so many endearing moments to moments of sadness and laughter. It's just such a classic, and I love black and white. So, that's my list!

Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer cause of death in the United States. This type of cancer (also known as colon cancer) occurs in the colon or in the rectum. A person?s risk of developing colorectal cancer increases as he or she gets older. This cancer occurs most often in people age 50 and above.

Screening for prevention and early detection

Screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding polyps, abnormal growths in the colon or rectum, so that they can be removed before they become cancerous. Screening also can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best. For most people, screening for colorectal cancer should begin at age 50 and continue regularly until age 75, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).??[PDF 242.08]

Family history is an important risk factor

Most colorectal cancer is caused by the complex interaction of many genes and behavioral risk factors, such as being overweight and physically inactive. In addition, specific gene abnormalities (mutations) are known to contribute to the development of some rare types of hereditary colorectal cancer.* These types of colorectal cancer typically occur at an earlier age than other types that are not considered hereditary.
People with a family history of colorectal cancer are at an increased?risk of developing this disease. • Screening tests also can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment often leads to a cure.

What Are the Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer?

Precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer don't always cause symptoms, especially at first. You could have polyps or colorectal cancer and not know it. That is why having a screening test is so important. Symptoms for colorectal cancer may include?

• Blood in or on the stool (bowel movement).
• Stomach pain, aches, or cramps that do not go away.
• Losing weight and you don't know why.

These symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer. If you're having any of these symptoms, the only way to know what is causing them is to see your doctor.

When Should You Begin to Get Screened?

You should begin screening for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50, then keep getting screened regularly. Some people have a higher risk because they have inflammatory bowel disease, a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer, or genetic syndromes like familial adenomatous polyposis or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (also known as Lynch syndrome). If you are 50 years old or older, or think you may have a higher risk for colorectal cancer, talk to your doctor about getting screened.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for colorectal cancer for all people until they turn 75 years old, and for some people when they are older than 75. If you are in this age group, ask your doctor if you should be screened.

What Are the Screening Tests for Colorectal Cancer?

Several tests are available to screen for colorectal cancer. Some are used alone; others are used in combination with each other. Talk with your doctor about which test or tests are best for you. The USPSTF recommends these tests?

• Colonoscopy (every 10 years).
• High-sensitivity fecal occult blood test (FOBT), also known as a stool test (every year).
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years) with high-sensitivity FOBT (every 3 years).

How Can I Pay for Screening Tests?

Many insurance plans and Medicare help pay for colorectal cancer screening. Check with your plan to find out which tests are covered for you. To find out about Medicare coverage, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
CDC's Colorectal Cancer Control Program provides access to colorectal cancer screening to low-income men and women who are 50?64 years old and are underinsured or uninsured in 25 states and four tribes.

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Thomas Robinson kept missing easy buckets. Tyshawn Taylor had a shooting performance he'd rather soon forget. Kansas made just two shots from outside 5 feet, and seemed to be in constant trouble against North Carolina State.

Yet a smile kept creeping across Robinson's face. Taylor spent most of the second half Friday night trying to calm down coach Bill Self, who was stomping along the Jayhawks' sideline.

"We haven't been a picture-perfect team all season," Self said later, "but that's one thing that's exciting. The guys take pride in not being perfect. They take pride in winning ugly."

They certainly won a muddy brawl against the Wolfpack.

Robinson had 18 points and 15 rebounds, Jeff Withey blocked 10 shots to finish one shy of the NCAA tournament record, and the second-seeded Jayhawks held on for a 60-57 victory. They advanced to play top-seeded North Carolina, led by former coach Roy Williams, which escaped with a 73-65 overtime victory over No. 13 seed Ohio earlier in the night.

All the upstarts have headed home.

It's the bluest of the bluebloods in a Sunday showdown for the Final Four.

"They're a great team, great coach, great program," Robinson said. "It's two great programs and when we do meet, I'm pretty sure it's going to go down as a big one."

It figures to be a little more sexy than their game against the Wolfpack.

Both teams struggled to make shots, run offense and get into a flow. Kansas (30-6) even squandered an eight-point lead in the final few minutes, failing to wrap up the win until Richard Howell's off-balance heave at the buzzer came up well short.

"The guys are tough. They're tough," Self said. "They find a way."

C.J. Leslie had 18 points to lead N.C. State (24-13), despite sitting much of the second half with four fouls. Scott Wood finished with 12 points on 2-for-10 shooting, though his biggest error wasn't a missed shot but the shot he never even got to attempt.

N.C. State had pulled within 58-57 on a transition layup by C.J. Williams with just over a minute remaining. The teams swapped possessions before Kansas managed to get a layup from Elijah Johnson off an inbound pass from Taylor with 13.5 seconds left.

The Wolfpack crossed midcourt and called a timeout to set up a play, which was designed to get the ball to Wood off a baseline pass. Instead, a skip pass went high and the sharpshooter stepped out of bounds trying to pull it in, giving the ball back to Kansas with 5 seconds to go.

Robinson was fouled and missed the free throw at the other end, but a pass down court and Howell's tightly guarded shot at the buzzer came up nowhere close, allowing Kansas to escape.

"We did not execute very well. The end of the day, that's my responsibility," Gottfried said.

Johnson finished with 11 points for the Jayhawks, who moved on despite a lousy performance by Taylor. Their second-leading scorer had six points on 2-for-14 shooting.

Kansas was just 1 for 14 from beyond the arc as a team.

"It gets frustrating, but I can't hang my head and get down. I've just got to be able to do other things to help my team win," said Taylor, who still managed 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Wolfpack took a page from Purdue's playbook over the first eight minutes, using constant double teams on Robinson inside and forcing Kansas to settle for jump shots.

They didn't go in, at least early on.

Just as they did against the Boilermakers last weekend, Kansas struggled to gain traction, and Leslie took advantage by scoring five of his 12 first-half points during an opening salvo.

Williams' 3-pointer gave the Wolfpack a 17-11 lead ? their biggest of the half.

Kansas eventually clawed back, relying on defense during a 12-0 run. Withey provided most of it inside with seven blocks in the first half.

"I was just in a zone," he said. "After the first block I just got in a rhythm."

Leslie answered with back-to-back baskets for N.C. State, and his bucket on the heels of a 3-pointer by Wood gave the Wolfpack a 33-32 lead at the break ? their last lead of the game.

Johnson, who provided the big shots that allowed Kansas to reach St. Louis, hit his only 3-pointer of the game out of halftime. It was the start of a 12-2 run during which Leslie was forced to the bench with four fouls and nearly 16 minutes still on the clock.

"It was a very physical game. They're very active coming over and helping," he said.

Kansas extended the lead to 50-40 when Taylor lobbed a pass to Withey for an alley-oop dunk, and a partisan crowd inside the Edward Jones Dome roared in approval.

Leslie finally checked back in with less than 7 minutes left, giving N.C. State a brief boost. But moments later he was back on the floor as trainers appeared to work on a cramp, and Kansas pounded away inside before he checked back into the game.

The lead was 58-50 with just over 3 minutes remaining, and Kansas managed to hold on during a furious final stretch to reach another regional final ? and earn a date with the Tar Heels.

"We didn't shoot the ball really great. To get the win feels really good," Withey said. "It was all defense, and we're dancing. We're still in the NCAA tournament."
