McCain: US inability to help Syria 'embarrassing'

(AP) ? The United States must show stronger international leadership to halt the violence in Syria, which could become a significant issue in this year's presidential campaign, two U.S. senators said Thursday.

Republican Sen. John McCain said last weekend's massacre of dozens of Syrian civilians proved that "it's time to act; it's time to give the Syrian opposition the weapons in order to defend themselves."

"It is also embarrassing that the United States of America refuses to show leadership and come to the aid of the Syrian people," McCain told reporters while visiting Kuala Lumpur with independent Sen. Joe Lieberman at the invitation of a Malaysian business association.

Lieberman said he believed it might become necessary to use "the kind of American and allied airpower" against Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces as what was used to oust Libya's Moammar Gadhafi last year.

President Barack Obama's administration has so far said it remains opposed to military action in Syria. It has relied heavily on economic sanctions as a means for pressing Assad to leave power.

In the wake of last weekend's massacre of 108 civilians, including children, in the town of Houla, the U.S. and several other countries expelled Syrian diplomats to protest the killings.

McCain said he expects "significant debate" before the presidential election about "America's role in the world, about our leadership, about our commitment to the fundamental rights."

"I think a lot of Americans are asking the question, why are we standing by while innocent children are being murdered ... and we use nothing but rhetoric in response," he said.

Lieberman said he hopes it becomes a campaign issue because "America should judge itself by the extent to which we follow a foreign policy that has a moral and humanitarian component to it."

McCain and Lieberman also said they believe that a strong U.S. political and military commitment in Asia is needed to ensure regional stability and to help peacefully resolve the territorial dispute over the resource-rich South China Sea.

Both stressed they do not envision any serious confrontation between the U.S. and China, but added that they oppose Beijing's expansive claims over most of the South China Sea, which are disputed by Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

"We support the position taken by the (Southeast Asian) countries that there be multilateral negotiations between China and the affected countries ? not, as the Chinese state, on a one-by-one basis. That would obviously give an unfair advantage to China," McCain said.

Lieberman added that the U.S. was "not simply going to roll over and accept anything that China asserts."

"It's been a bedrock principle of American foreign policy to protect the freedom of the seas," he said.

WASHINGTON Without immediate action, a new National Research Council report warns, the academic veterinary community could fail to prepare the next generation of veterinarians for faculty teaching and research positions as well as for jobs in state diagnostic laboratories, federal research and regulatory agencies, and the pharmaceutical and biologics industry. Although the supply of veterinarians is growing, more than half of veterinary students seek training in companion animal or pet medicine. In addition, increasing debt from veterinary education may inhibit graduates from pursuing Ph.D. training that would prepare them for academic careers, key jobs in the public sector, and some positions in industry.

Cost-cutting measures at universities have adversely affected the ability of colleges and schools of veterinary medicine to hire faculty in less popular fields of veterinary medicine and to support graduate research training. A potential shortage of professionals with training beyond a Doctor of Science in Veterinary Medicine could impact the supply of veterinarians to fill jobs overseeing and enforcing food safety and animal health standards, conducting research in human drug development and advances in pet health, and participating in wildlife and ecosystem management, infectious disease control, biosecurity, and agro-terrorism prevention.

"Companion animal medicine and its growing number of specialties that improve the health and lives of pets has been a success story, but it dominates veterinary schools' curriculum and resources, sometimes to the detriment of equally critical fields," said Alan Kelly, emeritus professor of pathology and pathobiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and chair of the committee that wrote the report. "We must ensure that schools train qualified veterinarians in sync with the diverse and growing array of societal needs."

For example, food-animal production is changing dramatically in the U.S. and abroad. Large U.S. producers need veterinary services to focus on "herd health" while small producers, who have difficulty collectively supporting a full-time veterinarian, need primary animal care. Having fewer veterinarians in rural areas raises concerns about the level of animal disease surveillance in the field, which is critical to the prompt detection of outbreaks with potentially massive economic consequences.

In developing countries, where meat demand is growing, crowding animals in hot, humid conditions places the health of animals, humans, and ecosystems at risk and is unsustainable. "The fact that 60 percent of all infectious diseases in humans are of animal origin and 75 percent of emerging infectious diseases in the last decade arose from animals underscores the importance of maintaining expertise in other areas of veterinary medicine," explained Kelly.

Addressing these challenges depends on the profession's commitment to promote and develop diverse career paths in veterinary medicine and on the efficient delivery of veterinary services, which in some cases may mean using veterinary technicians to extend the field's reach. The report's recommendations center on partnerships among professional veterinary organizations, academia, industry, and government. These groups could form a national consortium or committee to focus on the economic sustainability of the profession in all sectors of service, education, and research, and develop a national veterinary curriculum that could be delivered electronically or through alternative measures.

Veterinary medical organizations and the deans of veterinary colleges could work to increase the profession's visibility, standing, and potential to address global food security, says the report. Establishing a health-oriented think tank with the goal of advancing sustainable food-animal husbandry practices, welfare policies, ecosystem health standards, and the capacity of the veterinary profession in the developing world is important and could help future generations of veterinarians collaborate across professions, disciplines, and cultures. A part of this body could also evaluate the competencies required of U.S. veterinary graduates to address the global challenges of food and water safety and security, the impact of urbanization on food supply systems, and the health of wildlife and ecosystems.

Commonly used painkillers may protect against skin cancer

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A new study suggests that aspirin and other similar painkillers may help protect against skin cancer. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings indicate that skin cancer prevention may be added to the benefits of these commonly used medications.

Previous studies suggest that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, which include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, as well as a variety of other nonprescription and prescription drugs, can decrease an individual's risk of developing some types of cancer. Sigr?n Alba J?hannesd?ttir, BSc, of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and her colleagues looked to see if the medications might decrease the risk of the three major types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.

The researchers analyzed medical records from northern Denmark from 1991 through 2009 and identified 1,974 diagnoses of squamous cell carcinoma, 13,316 diagnoses of basal cell carcinoma, and 3,242 diagnoses of malignant melanoma. They compared information, including prescription data, from these patients with information from 178,655 individuals without skin cancer.

Individuals who filled more than two prescriptions for NSAIDs had a 15 percent decreased risk for developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 13 percent decreased risk for developing malignant melanoma than those who filled two or fewer prescriptions for the medications, especially when the drugs were taken for seven or more years or taken at high intensity. Individuals who took NSAIDs did not seem to benefit from a reduced risk of developing basal cell carcinoma in general, although they did have a 15 percent and 21 percent reduced risk of developing this type of cancer on less-exposed sites (body areas other than the head and neck) when they took them long term or at high intensity, respectively.

"We hope that the potential cancer-protective effect of NSAIDs will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention," said Ms. J?hannesd?ttir. "Also, this potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use."

Cops 'flooded' with tips in search for missing college student

Louisiana authorities say they have been "flooded" with tips in their search for a missing college student last seen leaving a late-night party by bicycle.

The search for Michaela "Mickey" Shunick intensified after police released surveillance videos Friday showing a bicyclist thought to be the missing 22-year-old college student. Police also said they were eyeing a white four-door pickup truck seen in the same video.

"We've actually been flooded with information on potential trucks and why they are suspicious, that we should check a residence because there is a truck there," Lafayette police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton told the Daily Advertiser. "The tips have included anything and everything. It's been a tremendous response.

Shunick was last seen around 2 a.m. May 19 leaving a house party in a neighborhood popular with college students. The anthropology major at the University of Louisiana, who friends describe as "responsible," left the home on a black bicycle.

"The first thing that raised a flag for us is when she didn't show up to her brother's high school graduation," Ashley Says, a close friend of Shunick told Fox44.

"She's not a rebel. She always has a can of mace in her front pocket, she obeys all traffic laws. She loved to have fun, but she's really responsible," Says told Fox44.

Shunick's friends have organized search parties and are sharing her story on social media, desperate for clues.

"She loves life," Says told Fox44. "She's a great person, and we?re all just trying to keep positive thoughts."

Shunick is white, with blond hair and about 5-foot-1 and 115 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call 337-291-8633.

China: Xi Jinping's new generation, Li Datong

The imminent transition of power in Beijing will see a new ruling group arrive in power. But?does its background and formation prepare it for the scale of China's political and economic challenge, asks Li Datong.

2012 is something of an election year worldwide. As many as twenty-five presidents will have been elected by the time it ends, including heads of state of some of the world's most important countries: the United States, Russia, France...and the People's Republic of China. What is different about China, however, is that the election here is (as usual) held not by popular vote but confined to a core group at the centre of power. The identity of the new leader depends not on the people's support but to a considerable extent on the balance of forces inside the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

If the identity of many of presidents is unknown until the people have delivered their verdict, in China the choice of the next head of state (and general secretary of the party) is known in advance. Unless there is a major, unforeseeable reversal, a key party congress towards the end of 2012 will select Xi Jinping as the designated successor of Hu Jintao. There is a difference, though, with past experiences of transition, when the new leader emerged from an elderly group of senior cadres (Deng Xiaoping is the classic example).

This time, according to reliable sources, the "constituency" that sanctioned Xi's appointment was composed of hundreds of senior party officials. True, the process by which he got to be nominated at all is less clear - a kind of black-box operation; but the very fact that his preferment will have ultimately required an election (albeit a limited one) to give him legitimacy suggests that the basis of the transfer of power in China has begun to respond to changing times.

But if the Xi Jinping era is about to begin, it also means the Hu Jintao era is coming to an end. How to evaluate the past decade, and what signals does it offer for the next period?

A new cadre

In my view, these ten years have been a period of lack of progress and the absence of political reform, which has meant that a backlog of various social problems (such as growing official corruption) has accumulated. The resulting tensions in society carry an enormous cost, including financial (with huge spending on domestic security, approaching the level of military expenditure). The overriding concern of this generation of leaders with ensuring "stability" has made them afraid of undertaking real action.

Why is that? The reason is that Hu Jintao and his colleagues in the heart of Chinese state power - the politburo's standing committee - share almost the same background. They moved through the education system in an entirely closed environment which prioritised obedience, imparted selective information, valued technical subjects over the humanities and social sciences, and depleted the ability to think independently.

Most importantly, they were products of a political movement, in some cases children of "pariah" families persecuted during the cultural revolution, whose background taught them to be loyal and conformist. This mental structure was reinforced by their predominant training as "technicians" or "engineers". These are not visionary or even ambitious individuals, but people who have achieved their status by a kind of miracle and whose sole purpose is to keep hold of it. Their subconscious attitude is conveyed by Hu Jintao's answer to a Japanese child who asked him why he wanted to be president: "Because the Chinese people picked me".

What are the chances that Xi Jinping's generation will be different? In some ways the signs should be positive. The rising Chinese communist leaders also grew up in an atmosphere dominated by politics, but most of their adulthood has coincided with the reform and opening up era launched by Deng Xiaoping at the end of the 1970s. They have had access to a far greater range of domestic and international information, enjoyed an affluent life, engaged in the pursuit of wealth and power, had the chance to travel to western countries and make contacts with people from them, and in some cases receive training in subjects such as economics and law. Again most importantly, they are active in politics rather then being mere products of politics.

These children of the 1980s acquired early an awareness of the dark and ruthless arts of politics as conducted in communist China, as well as of the new opportunities becoming available in business. Three in particular of the successor generation focused their commitment on politics: Xi Jinping, Liu Yuan (son of?former president?Liu Shaoqi) and Bo Xilai (son of another veteran, Bo Yibo). Almost at the same time, these three chose the same road after graduating from university by moving to the provinces and establishing a local power-base.

Two decades later, they entered the CCP's core leadership team, with Xi Jinping identified early as the likeliest candidate to be the next general secretary - and Bo Xilai as the most remarkable figure in China's political arena. Now, however, the discrediting of Bo Xilai after the extraordinary events in his Chongqing fiefdom has halted his rise - leaving the political field more open and less assured than it had seemed.

The approach of veterans' children to the summit of Chinese power should be favourable to political reform, if only because hardline political opponents will find it harder to attack their credentials. A comparison here, even though not necessarily a welcome one, is the way that Chiang Kai-shek's son launched Taiwan's political democratisation. The next leadership might in this respect have more imaginative as well as political space than its predecessor.

A bold design

In 2011, the intellectual Zhang Musheng - author of an influential study?of rural development in the pre-reform era?-?published a book that advocated the implementation of a "new democracy" in China. This was needed, he said, to address the legacy of domestic problems that had built up over the three decades of reform. The support of workers and peasants can only be assured by giving them education, healthcare, social welfare, minimum housing security, industrial training; and a shift from the current model of polluting and resource-intensive production to greater worker and farner participation in the process of economic change.

Zhang's reform design is bold, involving mutualisation of state-owned assets and widespread share-ownership by citizens, in part to solve the problem of the welfare needs of people on low incomes. He also recommends that the CCP allows open factions, independent trade unions and farmers' associations, and freedom of the press. ?Only the Chinese Communist Party can save China; only new democracy can save the Chinese Communist Party?, he writes.

The book provoked a debate among Chinese intellectuals that lasted six months. Zhang Musheng (whose mentor was Chen Yizi, adviser to prime minister Zhao Ziyang before the latter?fell following the Tiananmen incident in 1989) continued to insist that a new collective leadership in China cannot allow the current situation to continue, and that people's desire for change is an indisputable reality. Without political change, an authoritarian regime that seeks to postpone reform will risk the fate of the Soviet Union and its satellites (or, closer to home, the Qing dynasty that ended in 1911). Will China's next generation understand the extent of the crisis, and the tide of history that awaits it?

In case you are not in fabulous health when you first begin your program, work toward easy workout routines that are not to long ? maybe 20 ? 30 minutes in length.

In addition, don?t work the identical muscle groups on back to back days. Your muscles must have adequate time to heal following a tough work-out. As you become stronger, you?ll be able to increase the length of time that you target certain areas, and also how often you work that particular muscle group into your weekly weight-lifting routine.

Then, do not forget about fiber! A diet that is heavy in fiber is effective in preventing not just diabetes, but also many other health problems too. The easiest way to find fiber is in veggies and your personal favorite fruits. Quite a few cereals are chock full of fiber. In case you feel you are not absorbing enough, you can get some fiber supplements, which come in dissolving powder, pills and even fiber bars that you can eat. Fiber is so important because it assists in the digestion of food, which gives you more energy during the day. Weight control becomes easier when you are eating a fiber-rich diet.

Also, a significant aspect of diabetes management is regulating your insulin levels. Medigap policies offer terrific coverage for medical technology like blood glucose monitors and testing strips to monitor your glucose. However, consuming whole-grain foods will also automatically help you in tracking glucose. Keep your eye out for options to ordinary bread and similar bakery staples when looking for whole-grain products. In most cases, whole grain foods have a rich brown shade and will often state that this product is high in whole grains.

Begin by trading out your everyday white bread for a whole-grain wheat bread. As you are choosing breakfast cereals, search for brands that advertise high fiber, and look for the fiber count on the nutrition info column. Whenever you beef up the total amount of fiber within the baked goods sitting in your pantry, you help not only you personally, but also your family members as well.

Watch your weight on a routine schedule. Get into the habit of weighing in every week, in order to track your progress. To avoid gaining extra pounds, work out regularly, start eating a better group of food items, and snack on fruits and veggies rather than candy or salty snacks. One tip is to get a smaller plate for your meal. You should be able to avoid overeating by filling up a smaller plate as opposed to the over-large plates so commonly used these days.

Should you need help to stay on track, get assistance. Join a gym with a pal in your area who might enjoy many of the same types of exercise. Locate a dietitian to help you in controlling your daily calorie intake, and enlist a fitness trainer to encourage you in your weekly fitness activities. Keeping a healthy weight is a terrific method to avoid many medical problems, including diabetes. In the event that you do develop diabetes, you will see that it?s so much easier to control it if you?re not lugging around a bunch of extra weight.

By making each of these things into a habit, you will help your loved ones to make these changes along with you. Having support from your friends and relatives in these endeavors is a terrific way to help avoid the onset of diabetes as well as several other medical issues during your golden years, when you should be making the most from your life.

The Chef & I book

May 27 2012

?

I am totally overwhelmed at the response to both the book and our new column with The Sunday Times.

Over the past two weeks I have been inundated with the nicest emails and messages on FB from people all over the world.

Some of the messages are from people that have bought and read the book, and some are from people who are waiting for their book to arrive, and some are from people that have already started cooking the recipes from the book.

Down below I have included a few screen shots of messages I have received.

I think testimonials speak for themselves. You can see from reading the ones below that ?The Chef & I? is worth your hard earned shekels. Our book makes for a nice summer read and after you have finished the narrative part you can move on to the nourishing part and start cooking up some of the recipes.

The book launch, fast approaching on Thursday, (May 31st 2012. 6:00pm at Cases Wine Warehouse) will keep us busy for the upcoming week and after it has come to pass I will be back to blogging. The Chef and I have a list as long as your arm of food prep ahead of us, starting today and finishing on Thursday around 5:00pm leaving us just enough time for a quick shower and change before heading in to Cases to meet the Mayor of the city of Galway for a few photos.

If you are coming out to support us on Thursday ? do let us know?..even though we have been in the restaurant business for years and years and years ?. ?it is always nice to know how many people to expect!

First up ? an email from a lovely lady named Caroline ?

?

This made me cry ?

?

An old friend from my high school days putting it to the test!

?

Someone already trying out the recipes and posting it on their FB page!

?

?

Then a newer friend all the way from Kentucky showing of his new purchase!

?

An email from a special friend and former customer of ours in Cincinnati ?.

This one also made me cry ?

Another loyal Facebook fan putting the recipes to the test!

?

?

You must try this recipe ?..

?

And this one ?. just because of how it made me feel ?

?

This makes me happy ?

?

And this one is pretty nice too ?.

Words cannot express the pride I feel ?

?

Now ? before you go all thinking it is rosy in the garden ? there have been a few ?meh? comments too. Keep in mind I am terribly thick-skinned and well able to handle the criticisms ?.. and for my own reasons I am not going to highlight ?the who and why? these comments have come from but feel it is necessary to share them so you do not think I am delusional. I know this book is not for everyone.

?It?s an easy read? ?. . . .

Yes. It is. I am a busy Mum and have very little time to plough through a heavy read. I was writing it for ?myself? first.

?It sounds like it was written on a creative writing course? ?

Bingo. It was written on a creative writing course. I still am not sure what this one means exactly ? I think it means that maybe I did not really work hard enough at making it harder to read? I should have tried harder to incorporate bigger words and longer sentences perhaps?

Truth is, I worked very hard at keeping it ?an easy read? so that it would not bog the reader down.

I still have my traing wheels on guys. This is just my first book. I expect by the time I get to the fourth book ? I will have gotten the hang of it and be only fabulous at the book writing.

?

Those are, to date, the ?worst? things I have heard about the book and to be honest neither of those comments, coming from two very important people in my life, made me cry. Most of all the other comments did.

Going to college to learn how to write is a tough game. You are judged by your peers in college, you are graded by your teachers and your teachers are judged by their peers based on what you produce.

The lesson that I have just learned, now that the book is out in the world, is that none of that matters. All that matters is that last September 5th 2012 I set out to write and publish a book and I did it. From start to finish. And now the people who really matter, YOU ? the readers that have been ?liking? all my photos and ?loving and commenting? on all my stories over the last few years, are all loving our book..

Thank you, thank you, thank you ??..

This author has just emerged xx
