Support grows for liberal area at Israel holy site

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The rabbi of Judaism's holiest prayer site on Wednesday endorsed a proposal to establish a section where men and women can worship together, a groundbreaking motion that could end a decades-old fight against an Orthodox monopoly of the area.

The fight over the Western Wall has reached a fever pitch in recent months, after police arrested female worshippers who prayed at the site wearing religious garments and leading prayers ? acts that Orthodox Judaism permits for men only.

The arrests caused an uproar in Israel and among liberal Jewish leaders in the United States, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to instruct the semi-governmental Jewish Agency to devise a plan that would permit non-Orthodox forms of worship at the holy site.

The Western Wall's rabbi, Shmuel Rabinovich, told Army Radio Wednesday that while he dislikes non-Orthodox prayer, he would tolerate it in a separate section in order to end intra-Jewish fighting at the site.

"I want everyone to pray according to Orthodox Jewish religious law, but I don't interfere," said Rabinovich, who is Orthodox. "If these things can be done at the Western Wall without hurting others, and this can bring about compromise and serenity, I don't object."

The Western Wall is Judaism's most revered prayer site because it is a remnant of the biblical Jewish temple compound. Worship at the site is administered according to Orthodox Jewish religious custom: the men's section and smaller women's section are separated by a divider, and women are not allowed to lead prayer groups or wear prayer shawls, skullcaps or phylacteries ? small boxes strapped to the head and arms during prayer.

The pluralistic Reform and Conservative movements, which allow mixed prayer and female rabbis, have long campaigned for recognition in Israel. The two groups however are largely marginalized in the Jewish state despite being popular overseas, especially in the United States. The emerging plan could represent a significant accomplishment by these liberal streams of Judaism.

Under the plan, unveiled by the Jewish Agency announced on Tuesday, Israel would create a permanent area for mixed-gender and women-led prayer next to a section of the Western Wall that mainly serves as an archaeological site. Currently, liberal Jewish worship is permitted in the area only during limited hours. Under the proposed plan, a platform would be erected to expand the area and allow liberal prayer there 24 hours a day, like the Orthodox section of the site.

The two Jewish prayer sections would be separated by the large wooden ramp that leads to the Muslim Al Aqsa Mosque compound, a site also revered by Jews as the Temple Mount ? another reminder of the sensitive, inextricable mesh of religious claims to the area.

Natan Sharansky, the chairman of the Jewish Agency, said he had presented the proposal to Israeli lawmakers and Jewish leaders in Israel and the United States, and hoped it would be accepted.

"One Western Wall for one Jewish people," said Sharansky, a one-time political prisoner in the former Soviet Union. He expressed his hope that the site "will once again be a symbol of unity among the Jewish people, and not one of discord and strife."

The plan will be presented to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and must be approved by Israel's government before it is implemented. Netanyahu's office had no immediate comment.

Women of the Wall, a liberal Jewish women's group whose members have been arrested in controversial monthly prayer sessions in the current female-only section of the site, cautiously welcomed the proposal.

"The principle is the most important issue here," said Peggy Cidor, a board member of Women of the Wall. "The most important thing for us is that someone has at last understood that this cannot continue."

CSN: Giants erase four-run deficit to beat Rockies

BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO ? The Giants used a Mile High springboard to the NL West title last year. They beat the Colorado Rockies 14 times in 18 games.

They are off to a good start again this season, positioned to try for a three-game sweep after storming back from a four-run deficit to take a 9-6 victory Tuesday night at AT&T Park.

But this is not a template they should plan to follow very often. On an oddly warm night that had a very Coorsian vibe, Tim Lincecum got stomped for a five-run second inning that matched the worst beating he took in any single frame last year.

It took the first opposite-field home run of Brandon Crawford?s career, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, to give the Giants instant life. Then it took Hunter Pence?s 1000th career hit to tie it and one more rally against the Rockies? beleaguered bullpen to make a winner of reliever Santiago Casilla.

Pinch hitter Andres Torres hit a leadoff double in the eighth, Angel Pagan stung a tiebreaking single that nearly separated right-hander Matt Belisle from his clothes and the Giants tacked on two more to make it a less stressful save situation for Sergio Romo.

Lincecum?s problems are far from resolved ? he allowed six runs on four hits and four walks in six innings ? but the Giants have won in both of his starts. They only won consecutive Lincecum starts twice before the All-Star break last season.

Starting pitching report

Lincecum used to have a plumber?s wrench in his bag when a teammate would make an error behind him or a few hits would find turf. But the second inning sprayed out of control, just like so many of the rallies he couldn?t stop last season.

The drip-drip-drip started as it usually does, with a four-pitch walk to Troy Tulowitzki. Then Michael Cuddyer hit a ground ball to Scutaro?s left and the second baseman tried to spin and get the lead runner rather than take the surer out at first base.

It was a bad decision. The throw wasn?t nearly in time, and it was off line as well ? allowing Tulowitzki to take third base when Pablo Sandoval had to abandon the bag to chase down the ball in shallow left field.

Lincecum nearly minimized the damage. Todd Helton hit an RBI ground out, and after power threat Wilin Rosario drew a walk, Lincecum struck out Chris Nelson on a nasty slider. There were two outs and the pitcher?s spot coming up.

But Lincecum got to 2-2 before missing on consecutive fastballs to Juan Nicasio, including a full-count pitch that wasn?t close. It was the second consecutive start in which Lincecum walked the opposing pitcher (and he?d walk Nicasio again in the fourth, too.)

Then came the floodgates ? a two-run double from Dexter Fowler, who memorably tripled off Lincecum last year, and then a two-run single from Josh Rutledge.

That completed the damage in a five-run inning. Hard as it might be to believe, that matched the most runs Lincecum allowed in an inning last season (a five-run sixth May 25 at Miami).

The issue, once again, was fastball command. Lincecum had plenty of movement on his curve and changeup, but he couldn?t entice more swings. That?s because he threw just six strikes among 15 fastballs in the second inning.

Clearly, Lincecum remains a work in progress. But if he?s shown clear improvement in any area from last season, it?s improved conditioning and stamina. Even after a 32-pitch second inning, he was able to catch his breath and make it through the sixth inning on 104 pitches, allowing only a solo homer to Tulowitzki in his final four frames.

The upshot: Last year?s Lincecum probably doesn?t last as long, and would have overtaxed the bullpen as a result.

Bullpen report

Jose Mijares began the seventh and left a runner at second base for George Kontos, who preserved the tie when he got Tulowitzki to fly out.

Casilla pitched a scoreless eighth to receive the decision and Romo worked another 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his fifth save in five opportunities.

Romo has retired 15 of 16 batters faced this season, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out eight.

At the plate

The early innings were more about missed opportunities than the 2-0 lead that the Giants were able to hand Lincecum. Pence?s infield single drove in a run in the first inning but Hector Sanchez flied out to strand the bases loaded.

Scutaro managed a clutch hit in the second inning when he punched his second single of the game ? both of them to left field ? with two outs to drive in Crawford. The two crisp hits were a good sign for Scutaro, who entered in a 3-for-27 slump.

The Giants slugged their way back into the game in a four-run sixth, with an unlikely power source leading the way. After Nicasio committed the grave sin of walking Gregor Blanco and Sanchez to start the inning, Crawford greeted right-hander Adam Ottavino by smacking his 2-0 fastball to left-center field for a three-run homer

It was just Crawford?s second home run in 363 career plate appearances at AT&T Park ? and it was the first time he parked one the opposite way in the big leagues.

Crawford offered a sly smile as he crossed the plate, clearly not used to trotting on a ball hit anywhere to left field. Wherever they go, he makes his homers count. Of his eight career shots, three of them are three-run shots and two are grand slams.

The Giants still trailed 6-5, but they made up the rest quickly enough. Nick Noonan hit a pinch single, Pagan followed with a single and Scutaro sacrificed for the first out of the inning. After an intentional walk to Sandoval loaded the bases, Pence came through with his 1000th career hit to move everyone up 90 feet and tie the game.

Brandon Belt grounded into a double play to stall the rally at four runs, though.

The bench was key in the late innings. In addition to Noonan?s pinch hit, Torres proved adept off the bench with his double off Belisle to start the winning rally.

The Giants had 14 hits and everyone in the starting lineup except Belt managed to reach via hit or walk.

In field

Aside from Scutaro?s bad decision in the second inning , the Giants didn?t give away any outs. Sandoval made the defensive play of the game, ranging far into foul ground to snag Helton?s pop-up near the Giants bullpen.

Attendance

The Giants announced 41,910 paid, and the sellout crowd received snow globes depicting the World Series parade in front of City Hall. If you look hard enough, you can see a tiny little Bruce Bochy pushing his Rolls-Royce after it ran out of gas.

Up next

The Giants complete their first homestand and wrap up their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants will try to win for a 16th consecutive time with Barry Zito (1-0, 0.00) on the mound. He?ll be opposed by left-hander Jeff Francis (1-0, 1.50). The Rockies just can?t quit that guy.

Vudu Headquarters Robbed, Hard Drives With Private Customer Data Stolen

vuduThere's been a break-in! And this time, it's a physical, real-world break-in ? not the digital variety we've grown accustomed to. Vudu, the video streaming service acquired by Walmart in 2010, has just sent an email to customers letting them know of a break-in that occurred in their Santa Clara, CA office on March 24th. While it appears that credit card info is mostly safe (Vudu says they never stored it), the thieves walked off with multiple hard drives containing data like customer names, encrypted passwords, addresses, and phone numbers.

Obama, with Newtown families, demands gun control vote

gty obama hartford gun control tk 130408 wblog Obama, With Newtown Families, Demands Gun Control VoteObama, With Newtown Families, Demands Gun Control Vote

Speaking before families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, President Obama made an impassioned and urgent plea for stricter gun laws, as he accused Republicans of threatening to use "political stunts" to block reforms.

"This is not about politics. This is about doing the right thing for all the families who are here that have been torn apart by gun violence," the president told a packed crowd at the University of Hartford, just 50 miles from the site of the December shooting in Newtown, Conn. "It's about them, and all the families going forward so we can prevent this from happening again. That's what it's about."

Obama's visit to Connecticut comes at the start of a critical week, as the Senate is expected to debate the president's gun control agenda. While there are signs of agreement to expand background checks, two major parts of the president's plan, a ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, seem unlikely to pass.

In a rousing, campaign-style speech the president warned lawmakers not to use political tactics to prevent the Senate from voting on gun reform measures, arguing that they have an obligation to the victims of gun violence.

"If our democracy's working the way it's supposed to and 90 percent of the American people agree on something, in the wake of a tragedy, you'd think this would not be a heavy lift," Obama said of the broad support for background checks. "And yet some folks back in Washington are already floating the idea that they may use political stunts to prevent votes on any of these reforms."

Obama's warning comes as a group of 13 Republican lawmakers are threatening to block a vote on gun control legislation.

"They're saying they'll do everything they can to even prevent any votes on these provisions. They're saying your opinion doesn't matter and that's not right. That is not right," Obama said, as the crowd took to its feet, chanting "we want a vote!"

Nearly four months since the tragedy in Newtown, the president promised the parents of the slain children that "we will not walk away from the promises we've made."

"We want you to know that we're here with you," he said. "We are as determined as ever to do what must be done."

Before his remarks, the president met privately with several families of children who died in the Sandy Hook shooting. Many of those families then boarded Air Force One on their way to Washington to lobby Congress.

"If there's even one thing we can do to protect our kids, don't we have an obligation to try? If there's even one step we can take to keep somebody from murdering dozens of innocents in the span of minutes, shouldn't we be taking that step? If there's just one thing we can do to keep one father from having to bury his child, isn't that worth fighting for?" Obama said.

Egyptian judiciary urges top prosecutor to leave

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's highest judicial body on Sunday urged the nation's top prosecutor to step down less than five months after the president appointed him, reflecting persistent turmoil in the government's upper echelon that has often been accompanied by violence.

Also on Sunday, Christians angered by the killing of four fellow Christians in weekend sectarian violence clashed with a mob throwing rocks and firebombs outside the gate of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo.

At least 21 people were injured in the clashes, according to the head of the national ambulances services, Mohammed Sultan. Two local journalists were among those injured, one seriously, according to their newspapers.

The surprise statement from the Supreme Judiciary Council came on a day when Egypt's railway services came to a halt because of a strike by train drivers and conductors. The strike snarled inter-city transit in the nation of some 90 million.

Carried by the official MENA news agency, the statement urged the chief prosecutor, Talaat Abdullah, "to express a wish" to return to his previous job as a judge for the sake of the unity of the judiciary.

Abdullah's appointment in December set off protests by many judges and fellow prosecutors, who called it illegal. It set off days of protests outside his office in downtown Cairo. The protests forced him to tender his resignation, but then he withdrew it and stayed in office.

A court ruling last week annulled the presidential decree appointing Abdullah, but he has continued to carry out his duties. There was no word immediately available from Abdullah on his plans.

Removing Abdullah has been a key demand of the mostly liberal and secular opposition. Sunday's call by the council of the judiciary appeared aimed at offering him an honorable exit, a step toward ending a long-running crisis within the judiciary over the appointment.

During the past two weeks, Abdullah has issued summons against several media celebrities critical of Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president. They included popular TV satirist Bassem Youssef, who was accused of insulting Morsi and Islam. The satirist was released on bail.

The train drivers and conductors went on strike Sunday to demand better pay in yet another in a string of work stoppages during the past two years.

Transport Minister Hatem Abdel-Lateef approved a 10 percent hike in bonuses routinely given to all railway workers but train drivers and conductors rejected it as too little and went on strike. They are members of a national union representing all railway workers. Thousands of angry passengers crowded train stations. Video footage aired by several TV networks showed deserted platforms and empty trains heading nowhere.

The head of Egypt's Railways Authority, Hussein Zakaria, threatened legal proceedings against train drivers who called for the strike. Speaking to MENA, he said the strike caused "total paralysis" of train services, and that additional public buses were sent to the streets to deal with the backlog of passengers between Cairo and other cities in the Delta, and Alexandria on the Mediterranean.

Sunday's clashes outside the Coptic cathedral began when hundreds of angry Christians began an anti-government march after the funeral, chanting slogans against Morsi, just as several thousand did earlier during the funeral service for the four slain Christians.

Soon after they left the cathedral's complex, a mob, described by witnesses as residents of the area, pelted them with rocks and firebombs, forcing them to return to the sprawling cathedral complex. They also showered the protesters with rocks from the roofs of nearby buildings, according to witness Ibrahim el-Shareef.

Riot police later arrived, firing tear gas at the Christians and the mob. Several tear gas canisters landed inside the cathedral's grounds, causing a panic among women and children who attended the funeral.

Video footage aired live on the private ONTV network showed young men on the roof of a building adjacent to the cathedral firing handguns toward the compound.

The four Christians, along with a Muslim, were killed in clashes on Saturday in a town north of Cairo.

Inside the cathedral, several thousand mourners chanted slogans against Morsi, calling on the Egyptian leader to step down. They shouted "Leave!" and "This is our country, we will not leave."

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's estimated 90 million people. They have long complained of discrimination. Attacks against Christians have increased since the ouster two years ago of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

China reports 3 more cases of new bird flu virus

BEIJING (AP) ? China reported three more cases of human infection of a new strain of bird flu on Sunday, raising the total number of cases to 21.

Six of those who contracted the H7N9 virus have died. All 21 cases have been reported in the eastern part of the country.

Health officials believe people are contracting the virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there's no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people.

China's official Xinhua News Agency reported two new cases in Shanghai and one in east China's Anhui Province on Sunday, citing local authorities.

Shanghai has been ordered by the agriculture ministry to halt its live poultry trade and slaughter all fowl in markets where the virus has been found.

The capital cities of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu also have suspended sales of live poultry. Both provinces have reported H7N9 cases.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu as real iphone audio dock

Hi,

since 10.04, ubuntu is capable to connect with iphone/ipod/ipad, thank's to gtkpod and idevicelib, we can playback music on PC using bashee or rythmbox and that's cool.

anyway, i don't find a way to use my ubuntu as a REAL audio dock through USB.
What i mean is that i want to use ipob on my iphone to select music and :that it goes out from my computer speakers.
Right now, the only way to do so is by using shairport (https://github.com/abrasive/shairport) wich is simulating a airplay station. Anyway this method is great but it doesn't charge the iphone since the sound is sended through wifi.

Does anyone now a way to make ubuntu become a "real" iphone audio dock like the one that are sold, selecting the music ON the iphone, not ON the PC

thank's all

Greencastle school district to outsource 60 jobs

By BRIAN HALL

@bkhallpo

Greencastle-Antrim School District is expecting to see $600,000 in savings after a series of personnel moves shifts 60 jobs out of the district.

The school board opted Thursday to outsource 60 positions in transportation, maintenance, custodial and information technology to outside agencies. However, 29 employees in the food service department were spared.

The district said it will encourage contractors for bus services, information technology services and maintenance and custodial services to hire former district employees, but it is not guaranteed.

Changes begin to go into effect for the 2013-14 school year. School board President Brian Hissong praised employees for their response to handling a tough situation.

"I was very impressed," said Hissong. "I want to reiterate thank you. I know it's very difficult. They were very professional and understanding of the situation."

According to business manager Jolinda Wilson and Superintendent Greg Hoover, the district faced a $1.4 million budget deficit for the 2013-14 school year when the budget process began earlier this year with the unveiling of state proposals. The district's preliminary budget is $35.249 million, Wilson said.

During a budget presentation, Hoover said other options to close the gap included cutting four teaching positions and eliminating the director position at Tayamentasachta Environmental Center or eliminating the entire scholastic athletics

program.

"When it comes down to it, it was either doing this or cutting teachers or programs for kids," said Hoover. "Truly, as much as I hate to make those recommendations, it was what was best for kids."

The board opted to accept the recommendations of administration and outsource 16 school bus routes for the 2013-14 school year and 17 more during the 2014-15 school year. The move is expected to save $300,000 in the budget. The change affects 33 Greencastle-Antrim employees.

The measure passed by a 6-3 vote. Board members Hissong, Tracy Baer, Joel Fridgen, Ken Haines, Mike Still and Eric Holtzman approved the move. Board members Melinda Cordell, Dr. William Thorne and Michael Shindle voted against the change.

The district considered outsourcing 14 bus routes last year, but the school board changed its mind when a report by then-business manager Richard Lipella suggested it was cheaper to keep the bus system in-house than to send it to a contractor.

Wilson said her transportation analysis included all 33 routes.

"I looked at transportation as a whole," said Wilson. "Not only did I look at transportation as a whole, I looked at the increased revenue that we would receive from the state by contracting. We had increased revenue from the state and decreased expenses as a result of outsourcing."

In addition, the board voted 7-2 to outsource 22 maintenance and custodial staff positions to a private company. Shindle and Thorne were opposed. The change is estimated to save the district about $250,000 per year.

The board also voted 6-3 to outsource five positions in the information technology department. It could save the district about $50,000 per year. Shindle, Cordell and Thorne did not approve the move.

The board rejected a recommendation to outsource food service by a 9-0 vote. The food service department has 29 mostly part-time employees. The proposed savings was considered negligible ($15,000).

It's still early in the budget process, but other options include raising taxes up to 3.8259 mills which would net the district about $721,936. The real estate tax rate for 2012-13 was 98.90 mills. The final budget isn't due until June 30.

Why Isn't Joe Biden Giving Some Salary Back?

President Obama did it. So did Secretary of State John Kerry, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Attorney General Eric Holder. Some members of Congress have offered to do it, too.

But, setting up an awkward dynamic in the White House, there?s one high-profile Cabinet member who has not yet publicly pledged to return some of his government salary: Vice President Joe Biden. You would think that someone who has hinted he wants to run for president in 2016 would have a photo-op handing over the money.

One possible explanation is Biden?s net worth, which is on the modest side compared to those of the president and other Cabinet members. The Center for Responsive Politics calculates the vice president?s net worth at between $39,000 and $800,000 while the president?s could range from nearly $3 million to just over $8 million. Kerry's net worth is estimated at anywhere between nearly $200 million and $300 million; Hagel's from $2 million to $11 million, and Lew's from $750,000 to to almost $2 million.?

?It is a more difficult calculus for members who are not as wealthy,? said one long-time senior Democratic Senate aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so he could be candid.

Of course, being a millionaire probably makes it a little easier to pledge to?return a percentage of your salary to the federal government?to stand in solidarity with federal employees who?ve taken pay cuts because of budget cuts due to sequestration.

But because Obama will give $20,000 of his $400,000 salary back to the Treasury to share the pain of $85 billion in budget cuts that went into effect last month, the pressure on Biden to do the same is higher.

?Ultimately here, PR rules the day,? said the long-time aide. ?It's a way they can illustrate the common touch.?

The vice president's office would not say if he planned to return some of his salary, but did suggest he might.

"The vice president is committed to sharing the burden of the sequester with his staff," said a spokeswoman for Biden.

Later, the vice president's office added that it's not clear whether his office will face cuts due to sequestration, and if they do he would consider returning part of his salary.

Far from super-wealthy, Biden is not the only Cabinet member who hasn?t publicly said he?d give back part of his salary. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has ?announced no plans to give back part of her pay, though her estimated net worth is as high as $5 million,The New York Times reported.

Still, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano whose net worth is in line with Biden?s at $93,000 to $700,000, said she?d give back 5 percent, according to The Times.

The administration is navigating rocky political waters with sequestration. Before the cuts took effect, Obama argued that such a ?meat-clever approach? would deliver a serious blow to the economy. But since the cuts went into effect the economy has not ? yet, anyway ? stumbled as badly as the president suggested. Now, Obama and the Cabinet are very publicly returning part of their salaries, a move that simultaneously suggests solidarity but also reminds voters, many of whom can?t afford to spare a dime, that their political leaders have tens of thousands to spare.

?If you?re a member of Congress, surely the notion of lead by example should not just be a slogan,? said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia, according to The Times.

Biden, who earns $230,700 annually as vice president, has already made some public gestures because of the cuts. In February, he said he would again take Amtrak back to Delaware, just he did for three-plus decades while he was in the Senate.

?Look, guys, I?ve got to take the train now,? Biden said at the time, according to the News Journal. ?It?s cheaper than flying.?

New prime minister chosen in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? A prominent Lebanese politician named prime minister on Saturday after receiving vast support from parliament said he will work to end divisions in Lebanon and prevent the civil war in Syria from spilling over into the country.

Following two days of consultations, President Michel Suleiman asked Tammam Salam to form a new Cabinet. The 68-year-old Beirut legislator and former culture minister was chosen for the job by 124 members of the 128-seat parliament.

Salam faces the challenge of holding Lebanon together amid rising sectarian tensions resulting from the civil war next door in Syria. The country's two largest political blocs support opposite sides the fight between Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces and rebel fighters trying to oust him.

"I start from the necessity of taking Lebanon out of divisions and political tensions that were reflected in the security situation," Salam said in his first public statement after being chosen.

He added that his job also will be to prevent threats from the "neighboring catastrophic situation." Salam was trying to allay the fear in Lebanon that Syria's two-year civil war, which has killed more than 70,000 people, will spread to Lebanon.

Salam said he would do his best to form a "national interest government," a process that could take him a long time because of the sharp divisions among Lebanese politicians as a result of the Syrian crisis. He did not elaborate on the type of Cabinet.

Outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati resigned last month over a political deadlock between Lebanon's two main political camps and infighting in his government. Mikati, who was prime minister since June 2011, headed a government that was dominated by the militant Shiite Muslim Hezbollah group and its allies.

His abrupt departure plunged the nation into uncertainty amid heightened sectarian clashes related to Syria's civil war.

Mikati stepped down to protest the parliament's inability to agree on a law to govern elections set for later this year, as well as the refusal by Hezbollah and its allies in the cabinet to extend the tenure of the country's police chief.

"I start from the point of uniting national visions and to quickly reach an agreement on a new elections law that gives justice of representation," Salam said.

Although leaning toward the Western-backed anti-Hezbollah coalition, Salam, who is the son of the late former Prime Minister Saeb Salam, is seen as a consensus figure. Salam studied in Britain and has degrees in economics and business administration.

He was first elected to parliament for four years in 1996. He became minister of culture in 2008 under then prime minister Fuad Saniora. He was elected to parliament for the second time in 2009 when he ran for a seat in Beirut and joined a Western-backed coalition led by former prime minister, Saad Harir.

This Facebook Phone Parody Actually Makes Some Good Points

Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 11.02.44 AMWell, that didn't take long - Facebook Home is already being parodied on YouTube, in a video which actually ends up making a few biting comments about the potential problems the new application will face. For example, will the promised monthly updates to Facebook Home end up confusing users as to the basics of how their phone operates? Where will the ads (you know they're coming) eventually appear? How aggressive will Facebook become when it comes to filtering content from friends on our phone, a platform that's more personal and private than Facebook proper?

Apple's New HQ Has World Trade Center Style Delays and a Tech Campus Curse

Some $2 billion over budget and a year behind schedule, Steve Jobs's?extravagant spaceship-shaped Apple headquarters dream, Campus 2,?is turning into more of a nightmare?than the office of the future ? and investors don't like it. It's not that an extra couple billion dollars is that?big of a problem?for a company with $137 billion in cash reserves, but the?extravagance?of the new Cupertino development does have some worried. "It would take some convincing for me to understand why $5?billion is the right number for a project like this," Keith Goddard, the chief executive of Tulsa-based Capital Advisors, which owns 30,537 shares of Apple,?tells?Bloomberg Businessweek's Peter Burrows. At the going rate, Burrows estimates, Apple's new campus would cost more than the new World Trade Center complex, which has had its fair share of problems ? albeit with more symbolism at stake than single-company capitalism. Goddard is?more upset that Apple is being "so stingy" with dividends, but Capital's Goddard has another concern: If Apple stock continues its trajectory, the overpriced California complex, which is still tailored to meet the the late Jobs's?very specific tastes, would "perpetuate the negative story." Campus 2, it appears, is a symbol of excess when Apple needs a symbol of corporate dominance, not fading futurism.

It wouldn't be the first time an over-the-top headquarters was symbolic of a tech company's fading peak. This "campus curse" most famously hit Borland Software, which built a $120 million campus that was full capacity when it opened in 1993. Now: "It's a monument to one of the most notable examples of how fleeting corporate success can be," explains CNET's Steve Tobak. Other tech big-timers, like Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics, have invested in large, expensive office parks, only to see the company fade not too long thereafter.

RELATED: Steve Jobs Has Recently Lived 200 More Pages of His Biography

Apple seems like it may be on a similar trajectory with Campus 2, not just because of the building expenses but also because of the particularities of the project. Not too surprisingly, Jobs had a specific design vision that also happens to cost a lot of money. The "far more expensive" technique used for the ceilings, for example, "left one person involved in the project speechless," writes Businessweek's?Burrows. Perhaps more concerning, the overall vision for the new Apple campus doesn't match the office-worker life of the future that so many tech companies strive for these days. Because of Campus 2's round shape, it might prove more "alienating" than "convening," according to one architect who talked with Burrows. Most forward thinking tech companies try to design their work spaces to foster collaboration. Facebook's new Frank Gehry designed campus will be a big, long open space that can be adjusted as projects begin and end. Google provides all sorts of perks perks to get people collaborating in the office, even if its Mountain View headquarters doesn't look like, you know, a spaceship. While a circular dome looks "future now," it might prove isolating for Apple employees.

Despite the delays and budget issues, it sounds like Apple will go through with the plans to finish Campus 2 and move in by 2016, a year after the company had originally planned. And current CEO Tim Cook has indicated that it might not look exactly how Jobs intended. "Steve put a lot of love and attention into this before he passed away," Cook said during an annual meeting. "Hopefully we've made it better during the design phase. We want to do this right." With Cook at the helm, he, and not Jobs, will get the blame if and when the campus curse strikes.?

Connecticut lawmakers approve 'toughest' gun laws in US

Charles Krupa / AP

Paul Regish of East Hartford, Conn., holds signs as gun rights advocates enter the legislative office building at the Capitol in Hartford, Conn., on April 3.

By Matthew DeLuca and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Connecticut lawmakers passed a bipartisan package of gun laws that will expand the state?s existing assault weapons ban, impose limits on the size of magazines, and require universal background checks in the state scarred by one of the worst school shootings in American history.

The state's House voted 105-44 in favor of the bill early Thursday. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has said that he will sign the legislation into law.

State Sen. John McKinney, a Republican who represents the district where the Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre took place, said the bill was far from perfect but a necessary step to ensure the safety of the citizens of the state.?

Moments before the state's Senate bill passed by a vote of 26-10 on Wednesday, McKinney praised the state legislature for coming together in a bispartisan way, a model, he said, for the rest of the country.

"The message we can send if those outside the walls of Connecticut are listening is encourage them to do the same, encourage our elected officials in Washington to put aside the politics and see if they can find some common ground," he said.

Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams, a Democrat, opened the debate with a remembrance of the victims of the?Dec. 14 Sandy Hook shooting.

?All at once there was a report that as many as 20 children had been killed,? Williams said. ?For a few seconds it was hard to breathe. I looked around at my colleagues as we recoiled at the horror of what we were learning.?

Adam Lanza fired off 154 bullets in less than five minutes after entering the school in Newtown with a Bushmaster .223 rifle and several 30-round magazines, investigators have said.

Legislators in Connecticut worked to achieve a bipartisan consensus on the gun-control package. Sen. Majority Leader Martin Looney, a Democrat, told NBC News in March that he hoped for a ?broadly supported bipartisan bill,? but said it was ?more important that we have a strong bill that meets the need.?

The package put together in Connecticut should serve as an example for national lawmakers, Williams said on Monday.

?There were some who said the ?Connecticut effect? would wear off ? that it would wear off in Connecticut and it would wear off across the country,? Williams said. ?What they didn?t know was that Democrats and Republicans would come together and work to put together the strongest and most comprehensive bill in the United States to fight gun violence, to strengthen the security at our schools, and to provide the mental health services that are necessary.?

Malloy called the package ?the toughest law passed anywhere in the country.?

Supporters of stricter gun controls applauded the bill even before it went to a vote.

?I am grateful that the Governor and Connecticut Legislature took a bipartisan path to a strong gun responsibility bill,? Nicole Hockley, whose son Dylan was killed in the Newtown shooting, said in a statement. ?I particularly appreciate that the Legislature listened to us and strengthened the provision on large capacity magazine size. ?

Sandy Hook Promise thanked the governor and legislators for ?passing the strongest gun responsibility legislation in the nation.?

Dozens of protesters who oppose new gun laws were gathered at the Capitol building in Hartford on Wednesday.

?I?m prepared to contribute maybe to a class-action lawsuit, follow this up through the legal system,? gun owner Joe Winslow told NBC Connecticut.

?I want legislators to pass laws that will protect people while not violating the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens,? said Joel Klusek, another anti-gun control protester.

A post on the blog of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a group that opposes gun control, said that buses would transport protesters from the parking lot of a Cabela?s sporting goods store in East Hartford to the Capitol and back on Wednesday.

?Please help us fill buses to the Capitol in Hartford as we assemble in the gallery above the floor where critical votes will take place,? the post read. ?This is a last stand to show our legislators that we will not go away and accept the proposal as our fate.?

?CCDL wishes to thank the NRA for running these buses throughout the day!? the post said.

The state Senate passed the bill just moments after President Barack Obama finished a rally in Denver where he continued his push for Congress to pass a bill requiring background checks for every gun owner.

Next week, the president will travel to Hartford to continue his call for stricter gun control laws as the Senate prepares to take up the bill.

The Americans, Season 1

Matthew Rhys as Philip Jennings and Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings Matthew Rhys as Philip Jennings and Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings

Photograph by Craig Blankenhorn/FX.

In Slate?s TV Club for The Americans?which was created by Joe Weisberg, brother of the Slate Group's chairman and editor-in-chief, Jacob Weisberg?June Thomas will IM each week with a different partner. This week she chats with Masha Gessen, director of Radio Liberty's Russian service and author of The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin.

June Thomas: Masha, it?s so kind of you to talk about The Americans with me. I?m going to begin with a big, overbroad question, but it?s the thing I?ve been dying to ask you: As someone who came to America from Russia at about the time this show is set, does the portrayal of Russians in the final decade of the Soviet Union ring true to you?

Masha Gessen: June, I am so grateful you turned me on to this show. The incredible thing about The Americans is that I find it utterly believable. I don't mean some of the latest plot turns or the very shaky premise that Philip and Elizabeth could, as adults, have learned to speak English like natives, but the overall psychology has me hooked.

My favorite moment comes when Nina, the FBI mole in the KGB rezidentura, chides Stan, her handler, for seeing moral issues in black-and-white, as Americans are prone to do. She explains that for Russians, all things are seen in shades of gray. I am willing to bet that this conversation actually took place between uncounted scores of Russian-American couples in the 1980s. Emigr?s from the late Soviet Union brought with them a wholly relativistic view of morality and an utter disregard for convention that was in any way associated with the state?like marriage. So Nina is utterly oblivious to Stan's guilt about cheating on his wife or taking advantage of Nina herself, or to his extreme discomfort with her trading sexual favors with her boss for secrets she brings back to her lover.

This is also what makes the story of Elizabeth and Philip?s marriage so compelling to me: Not only are they two spies stuck in an arranged marriage each of them wishes and fears might become real?they are two Russians stuck in an American marriage each of them wishes and fears might become real. When Elizabeth asks Philip whether he had sex with an old lover, Irina, Philip lies not just because he is a spy trained always to lie?especially about sex?but also because he is a Russian married man, which also means he is trained to lie, especially about sex. If the Western sexual revolution brought sex out into the public sphere, the silent Russian sexual revolution simply severed the automatic connection between sex and relationships and especially marriages?but no one ever talked about it. I found the whole separation storyline in Episode 9 heartbreaking for this very reason: Elizabeth and Philip separate like Americans, in a way that feels profoundly foreign to them, mouthing stock American lines to their American kids. Elizabeth's mention of her imaginary parents who never would have considered separating is a particularly nice touch.

Thomas: That's fascinating. It also brings up one of the real-world parallels the show does so well. In The Americans, the Jenningses can't share their cultural attitudes and insights?about sexual fidelity in marriage or the right way to barbecue?because they're deep-cover spies. They?re not typical, but there's always a tendency for the process of assimilation to discourage immigrants from sharing lessons from their home countries. I bet Russians have some useful thoughts about how to teach mathematics, and Brits could share ideas on how to provide health care to the entire population, but that exchange never seems to happen.

The show is great at pointing out the error of allowing sentiment into the cold business of international relations. All the tragic events of this week?two deaths and an escalation in Cold War tensions, not to mention the loss of Stan's honor?stem from emotions that should probably have been controlled: Amador's jealousy and the FBI agents' need for revenge. Am I crazy to take this lesson from the episode?

Gessen: I'm not sure I would agree. These spies deal in emotions?they trade on trust, affection, sexual attraction. The Russians are shown to be much better at it than the Americans, again because the Americans are too earnest for this job (or this life). But still, I don't think the lesson is that we shouldn?t let emotions into the business of international relations; I think it's about the pain and, actually, the catastrophe of losing at your own game.

Thomas: You mean, the Soviets were better at the endless deceptions of the spy game?Philip, as Clark, doesn't hesitate to tell Martha that "this is real," when Clark himself doesn?t even exist, while Stan is deeply convicted about manipulating Nina?and yet they still lost the Cold War? Because their system was so deeply flawed that everyone, including most of their own spies, would rather be here than there?

OK, let me try another parallel?sorry, I?m a regular Agnes Martin today. Is Russia today like the FBI agents in this episode?angry and hurt and lashing out to remind everyone they're still powerful?

Gessen: I like your second parallel better. I love it, in fact.

As to why Russia lost the Cold War, to the extent that it had to do with the spy game, which isn't to a very large extent, it was because Russian spies were more like the rezidentura than like Philip and Elizabeth.

Another point I happily grant the writers of The Americans is the portrayal of the rezidentura, the secret-police outpost at the Soviet Embassy: I think it is uncannily accurate. Do you ever wonder what all those people with the folders and the filing cabinets and the desks and the phones are doing there? Especially those of them who know nothing about what they are doing there, like Vlad, who was killed in this week's episode? Well, the answer is: collecting unfathomable amounts of useless information. Toward the end of the Soviet Union, most of the KGB had become dysfunctional. Thousands of agents in the country and abroad were assembling vast files of information that was often public?often, in fact, it was press clippings?as well as writing endless reports on their every move. The center was incapable of digesting even a small part of this information. The organization turned into a giant paper jam. And this was one of the reasons the Soviet system collapsed.

Thomas: That was also true of the suburban spies who were sent back to Russia a couple of years ago, of course. A lot of the material they supplied was stuff that could be found on public websites.

Gessen: There was a couple among them, by the way, living in Cambridge, Mass., with a couple of teenage children, one of whom had no idea that his parents were Russian. They claimed they were French Canadians?to explain away their accents (see my point about grown-ups being unable to learn English well enough to pose as natives). When they were sent back, one of their sons begged to be allowed to stay at the school he had been attending, but, from what I understand, he had to accept his new motherland was Russia.

Thomas: Joe Weisberg has said that when he was creating The Americans, Paige and Henry, the children who don't know their parents' true identities, were inspired by CIA agents' kids. At some point, agents sit down their children and come clean about their real employer. I have friends who went through this?it sounds as unsettling and disruptive as a ?mom and dad, I?m gay? conversation, or the "we're separating" chat that Philip and Elizabeth had with their kids.

Gessen: Right. Although there is a significant added source of discomfort in the case of sleepers: The kids literally learn something new about who they themselves are, not just their parents.

TMobile reverses course, reveals Lumia 810 won't be updated to support LTE

We've some really unfortunate news to share with Lumia 810 owners who'd purchased the handset on T-Mobile's word that a software update would enable LTE support. As it turns out, despite the Lumia 810's hardware readiness and regulatory approval to access Band 4 LTE, that's not going to happen -- T-Mobile isn't going to release the update. Sadly, this isn't an April Fools' prank. If you're scratching your head about the revelation, you're not alone. Representatives for the UnCarrier first revealed to us back in January that a software update would enable LTE functionality, which is a position that it's maintained up through last week. As it stands, this leaves T-Mobile without an LTE offering for Windows Phone users, as the smartphone field is now limited to the Apple iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4. We've asked T-Mobile whether it might make concessions to those who purchased the Lumia 810 on good faith that an LTE software update would be released, but for the moment, you'll need to find solace in the carrier's speedy HSPA+ 42 network.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Tuesday asked Congress to spend $100 million next year on a new project to map the human brain in hopes of eventually finding cures for disorders like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and traumatic injuries.

Obama said the so-called BRAIN Initiative could create jobs and eventually lead to answers to ailments including Parkinson's and autism and help reverse the effect of a stroke. The president told scientists gathered in the White House's East Room that the research has the potential to improve the lives of billions of people worldwide.

"As humans we can identify galaxies light-years away," Obama said. "We can study particles smaller than an atom, but we still haven't unlocked the mystery of the three pounds of matter that sits between our ears."

BRAIN stands for Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies. The idea, which Obama first proposed in his State of the Union address, would require the development of new technology that can record the electrical activity of individual cells and complex neural circuits in the brain "at the speed of thought," the White House said.

Obama wants the initial $100 million investment to support research at the National Institutes of Health, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation. He also wants private companies, universities and philanthropists to partner with the federal agencies in support of the research. And he wants a study of the ethical, legal and societal implications of the research.

The goals of the work are unclear at this point. A working group at NIH, co-chaired by Cornelia "Cori" Bargmann of The Rockefeller University and William Newsome of Stanford University, would work on defining the goals and develop a multi-year plan to achieve them that included cost estimates.
